Brother-proofing a christmas card

When we were younger, my brother and I had a game of ‘brother-proofing’ each others cards; this consisted of covering the envelope with as much tape as we could before we were told off for wasting it. This year I decided to revive this game; on Christmas day I presented my brother with his card:

Building an arc welder from microwave oven transformers

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks building an arc welder by winding new secondaries onto two microwave oven transformers (MOTs). The one important lesson to learn from all of this is that high power transformers are not a place where the “fuck it that’ll do” method works; I wrecked a couple of primaries so ended up having to find fresh MOTs and start again. Building a 10kV DC power supply

It’s time for the first post filed under ill advised experiments. Just in case you’d not got the hint from the name, don’t try this unless you know what you’re doing; one small slip and the only silver lining will be the cut-price cremation you’ll get for half doing the job yourself.

I’ve spent the last week building a 10kV DC power supply capable of about 100mA. In the main part it is composed of a microwave oven transformer(MOT), 4 microwave oven diodes and 60 camera flash capacitors. Continue reading
